// Sustainability
New Congo Development Approach
To support our sustainability agenda, NCD has adopted the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Global Compact and the United Nations Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (a guide to responsible investment). We also seek to comply with local and international guidelines by recognizing best practices in waste management.
The Global Gold Association’s Responsible Gold Mining Guidelines address key ESG issues in the gold mining industry and set clear expectations for consumers, investors and exports as part of the gold mining mission. We are now in the second year of our three-year process for accreditation under these standards after completing the required gap testing in the first year.
In 2015, member states adopted the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals, which include a total of 169 indicators and specific targets. They aim to create a better world by 2030 by eliminating poverty, preventing inequality and protecting the world from the adverse effects of climate change. An important aspect is the role of the government, the public and the private sector in supporting the public to achieve these goals. In 2018, we updated our sustainability process according to our sustainability targets.
The United Nations Global Compact is a voluntary initiative based on the CEO's commitment to develop global standards and take action in support of United Nations goals. The ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact are drawn from the following sources: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization Declaration of Labour Principles and Guidelines, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the United Nations Convention Against Disease.
